Handling Labels
The following handling labels provide information relating to handling and stowage of Dangerous Goods (if applicable):
Cargo Aircraft Only
This label indicates that a package can be transported on a cargo aircraft only.
|
Radioactive Material Excepted Package
This label must appear on all Excepted Quantity radioactive packages |
Lithium Batteries or Sodium ion Batteries
* Place for UN number(s)
|
Packages containing Lithium cells or batteries or Sodium ion cells or batteries prepared according to Section II of Packing Instructions 966, 967, 969, 970, 977 or 978 and Section IB of Packing Instructions 965 and 968 must have the Battery Mark shown here. Note: The mark illustrated in Figure 7.1.C of the 63rd Edition of the IATA DGR may continue to be used until 31 December 2026; that mark allowed for a telephone number for additional information to be placed underneath the UN number. From 1 Jan 2023, there has no longer been a requirement for a telephone number to be included. The mark must indicate the following as appropriate:
Where a package contains cells or batteries assigned to different UN numbers, all applicable UN numbers must be assigned on one or more marks. The UN number/s indicated on the mark should be at least 12mm high and the minimum dimensions of the mark must be 100 mm wide x 100 mm high. The hatching must be a minimum width of 5 mm. If the size of the package so requires, the dimensions may be reduced to not less than 100 mm wide x 70 mm high. Where dimensions are not specified, all features must be in approximate proportion to those shown on the full-size mark. The symbol on the mark must be black on white or suitable contrasting background and the hatching must be red. The mark must be rectangular or square. Packages containing Lithium batteries packed under Section IB of packing instructions 965 and 968 must also bear the Lithium Battery or Sodium Ion Battery Class 9 hazard label (see the previous page of this Module, which shows the Class 9 Lithium Battery or Sodium Ion Battery hazard label underneath Note 2). |
Magnetized Material
This label must appear on all shipments of magnetized material. These shipments should be kept well clear of the aircraft compass detector units. Care must be taken to ensure that a number of packages loaded together do not have a cumulative effect. Note: when magnetised material is being transported, the "Magnetised Material" handling label replaces the Class 9 "Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods" label. |
Package Orientation
“This Way Up” or Package Orientation Labels must appear on combination packages and overpacks containing liquid dangerous goods. At least 2 of these labels must be placed on opposite sides of the package to show the proper upright orientation of the inner packagings (the inner packs must face upwards). There are some exceptions to this rule: - dangerous goods in inner packagings each containing 120 mL or less. There must be sufficient absorbent material between the inner and outer packagings to completely absorb the liquid contents; - infectious substances in primary receptacles containing 50 mL or less; - radioactive material; or - dangerous goods in gas-tight inner packagings, e.g. tubes, bags or vials, which are opened by breaking or puncturing. Each inner packagings must not contain more than 500 mL. |
Cryogenic labels
This label is required in addition to the Division 2.2 Hazard Label. Note: Gas may leak from these packages creating a mist which could look like smoke – this phenomenon is normal. Shipments should be segregated from live animals. Replacement of labels after the point of acceptance is the responsibility of the operator. |
Keep Away from Heat
This label must be used in addition to the applicable hazard label on packages and overpacks containing self-reactive substances in Division 4.1 and Division 5.2 Organic Peroxides. |
Environmentally Hazardous Substance
Packages containing environmentally hazardous substances or mixtures meeting the criteria of 3.9.2.4 and (UN 3077 and UN 3082) must be durably marked with this environmentally hazardous substance mark. |
Additional Markings
When transporting Biological Substance, Category B (UN3373) according to Packaging Instruction 650, this mark must be displayed on the external surface of the outer packaging. There is no requirement for the addition of an Infectious Substance hazard label. |
When transporting genetically modified micro-organisms (UN3245) in accordance with Packaging Instruction 959, this mark must be displayed on the external surface of the outer packaging. |
