Module 7 - Marking Page 2 of 3

Additional Markings

There are additional marking requirements for certain dangerous good shipments.

For classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 8, the net weight of dangerous goods contained in each package must be shown. The following indicates the extra marking required for specific class of dangerous goods.

Class 1
Explosives must have the net quantity of the explosives and the gross weight of the package.

Class 2
Refrigerated liquefied gas under the provisions of packing instruction 202 must have the package orientation labels plus the wording “Keep Upright” at 120° intervals around the package. The wording “Do not drop – handle with care” may also be marked on the package.

Division 6.2 UN 3373 Biological Substances, Category B
Net quantity is not required to be shown on the outside of the package. However if dry ice is used as a refrigerant, the net quantity of dry ice must be shown.

Division 6.2 Infectious Substances
For division 6.2, Infectious Substances, the “NAME AND TELEPHONE NUMBER OF A RESPONSIBLE PERSON” must be written on the package.

Class 7
Radioactive Material must be marked either Type A, Type B (u) or Type B (m) as required. Also, if the package gross weight is more than 50 kg, then the weight should be marked on the package.

Class 9
Carbon Dioxide Solid (dry ice) must have the net weight of dry ice written on the package.

Overpacks

An “overpack” could be in the form of a larger container or shrink-wrapping around multiple packages.

All marking and labelling on dangerous goods packages contained in an “overpack” (see terminology) must be clearly visible or reproduced on the overpack. These markings would include Limited Quantity or Salvage Packaging (if applicable).

If consignment consists of multiple overpacks, an identification marking must be shown on the outside along with the total quantity of each individual substance contained within the consignment.

This information is also to be shown on the Shipper's Declaration form.
