Handling Labels and Additional Markings

Apart from the mandatory class labels (Diamond Shaped) there may also be a need to apply handling label/s (handling labels are square-shaped). Below are the different handling labels that that the shipper may need to be apply if applicable:

Cargo Aircraft Only

This label indicates that a package can be transported on a cargo aircraft only.

Radioactive Material Excepted Package

This label must appear on all Excepted Quantity radioactive packages

Lithium Batteries or Sodium Ion Batteries

This battery mark should be used on packages containing lithium cells or batteries, or sodium ion cells or batteries prepared in accordance with Section II of Packing Instructions 966, 967, 969, 970, 977 or 978 and Section IB of Packing Instructions 965 and 968.

The mark must be rectangular or square. It must be a minimum of 100 mm wide x 100 mm high and the minimum width of the red hatching (the red stripey part bordering the mark) must be 5 mm. If the package is not quite big enough for this size of mark, the mark may be reduced to not less than 100 mm x 70 mm high. The battery symbol must be black on white or a suitable contrasting background.

Please note: the battery mark must be applied on one face of the package. If the mark is applied by means of a label, the label must not be folded or applied in a way that makes it appear on different faces of the package - it must be wholly on one face of the package.

* Place for UN number(s)

Please also note: Packages containing Lithium batteries that are packed under the requirements of Section IB of Packing Instuction 965 and 968 must also bear the Class 9 - Lithium battery or Sodium ion battery hazard label below:

Magnetized Material

This label must appear on all shipments of magnetised material. These shipments should be kept well clear of the aircraft compass detector units. Care must be taken to ensure that a number of packages loaded together do not have a cumulative effect.

Note: when magnetised material is being transported, the magnetised material handling label replaces the class 9 miscellaneous label.

Package Orientation

“This Way Up” or Package Orientation Labels must appear on combination packages containing liquid Dangerous Goods. There are some exceptions from this rule - flammable liquids 120 ml or less, infectious substances 50 ml or less, and radioactive material do not need Packing Orientation labels. At least 2 of these labels must be on the opposite sides of the package.

Cryogenic labels

This label is required in addition to the Division 2.2 Hazard Label.

Note: Gas may leak from these packages creating a mist that could look like smoke – this phenomenon is normal. Shipments should be segregated from live animals.

Replacement of labels after the point of acceptance is the responsibility of the operator.

Keep Away from Heat

This label must be used in addition to the applicable hazard label on packages and over packs containing self-reactive substances in Division 4.1 and Division 5.2 Organic Peroxides.

The label should be affixed on the same surface of the package near the hazard label(s).

Environmentally Hazardous Substance

Packages containing environmentally hazardous substances or mixtures meeting the criteria of 3.9.2.4 and (UN 3077 and UN 3082), must be durably marked with this environmentally hazardous substance mark.

Please note: the Environmentally Hazardous Substance mark must be applied on one face of the package. If the mark is applied by means of a label, the label must not be folded or applied in a way that makes it appear on different faces of the package - it must be wholly on one face of the package.
